City of Hope National Medical Center (COH) is a world leader in the research and treatment of cancer, diabetes and other serious diseases. City of Hope includes a 215-bed freestanding cancer hospital as well as more than 30 community-based clinics that stretch from Thousand Oaks (the furthest west) to Upland (furthest east). It is a time of growth for COH, with new clinics set to open in Orange County, a $14 million cancer clinic slated to open in Newport Beach, and a $300 million cancer center expected to open in 2022 in Irvine. In addition, plans are well underway to build a new Outpatient clinic building and a new patient tower on the Duarte campus. COH is one of only 49 NCI designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation, ranked as one of the nation’s “Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report for more than 10 consecutive years and ranked number 11 in 2019. In fiscal year 2017, COH was awarded more than $135.1M in research grants and received $398.1M in revenue from patented technologies. COH has earned its eighth consecutive Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award. COH’s research facilities set them apart, with three manufacturing facilities on campus that manufacture biologic and chemical compounds, allowing them to quickly turn breakthrough discoveries into lifesaving therapies. City of Hope is currently on the Magnet Journey for Nursing Excellence and expects to submit documents in August of 2020.
The Executive Director of Case Management (EDCM) is responsible for the design and implementation of programs and systems to facilitate transitions of care that meet the department and divisional objectives consistent with City of Hope’s philosophy, mission, vision and strategic plan. Directs and supervises the Case Management department and is accountable for managing service, quality and financial goals for Case Management operations. The EDCM reports to and supports the Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer. This position has the degree of independence required to achieve operating results consistent with approved operating plans, objectives, and policies. The EDCM is responsible for the overall operation of the Department, including direct interaction with the Medical Staff, compliance with accreditation, title 22, etc. The EDCM must have the ability to influence physician, staff and leadership though the use of effective communication and data driven results. In addition, this position develops and maintains the departmental operating budget, annual review and development of case management (CM) and utilization management (UM) plans. Works closely with physicians and Advanced Practice Providers and leads personnel in the provision of safe, high quality patient care, especially as it relates to discharge planning and transitions of care. Responsible for the oversight of authorizations and appropriateness of inpatient admissions, continued stay days, and discharges in a timely manner. Leads teams to achieve strategic outcomes. Collaborates with personnel to assure appropriate and safe staffing/scheduling. Serves as a leader/participant on many hospital committees. The EDCM has two direct reports: a Manager for CM and a Manager for UR and is responsible for approximately 50 FTEs.
Bachelor and Masters’ degrees one of which must be in nursing. Active or eligible for RN licensure in California.
Minimum of five years in nursing leadership.
Minimum of five to ten years nursing experience in Case Management.
Experience with discharge planning, utilization management, denial management and related regulatory requirements (CMS Conditions of Participation, Joint Commission).
Experience in an AMC or complex organization.
CMSA, ACM or CCM certification highly preferred.
Cancer Center or Oncology experience preferred.
Collective bargaining/union experience.
Excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to implement change and influence others.
Ability to engage and influence physicians, staff, and leadership through effective communication and data driven decision making.
