Under the direction of theChief Nursing Officer (CNO), assumes 24-hour accountability and responsibilityfor the clinical and fiscal management of assigned patient care units. Provides assistance to the CNO in theaccomplishment of unit specific, nursing department and organizationalgoals. Maintains awareness of legal,professional, regulatory, and institutional responsibilities. Acts as liaison between the medical staff andthe nursing staff.

In collaboration with the CNO, develops and implementspolicies and procedures affecting nursing practice for assigned unit. In-services staff when policy changeoccurs. Evaluates staff compliance topolicies.

Ensures Charge Nurses and staff consistently remainwithin established budget and PAR levels.

Maintains operations of unit within budgetparameters. Identifies and collaborateswith CNO to determine creative methods of controlling costs or generatingrevenue while providing maximum value to both the patient and the Hospital.

Participates in ongoing product evaluation; makesrecommendations as appropriate.
Ensures the preparation of work schedule includes theproper number of staff, appropriate specialty and skill mix based on ADC andbudgeted HPPD.
Uses Kronos system in preparing productivity reports.
Submits daily productivity reports to DepartmentDirector, CNO, CFO, and COO.
Plan, organizes and supervises the activities of thedepartment/service. Gives direction tothe charge nurse responsible for an assigned shift.

Participates in the ongoing evaluation and selectionof staffing systems that are flexible to attract new staff members and flexibleenough to retain staff.
Creates a peer interview process for the unit andensures that staff are educated in the process and participate on a regularbasis.
Uses skill and knowledge to model conflict resolutionwith nursing staff, physicians, other departments and all other hospitalclients.
Uses skill and knowledge to discipline withoutpunishment in the course of daily unit operations.
In collaboration with CNO and Chief Human ResourcesOfficer, coaches, counsels and terminates personnel in accordance with hospitalpolicies and employment laws.
Oversees the workflow of the department/unit. Ensures daily assignments are complete, fair,and maintained.
Rounds daily with the charge nurses to assess andimproves the quality of care and service provided.
Maintains quality control programs asappropriate. Works closely with the CNOand nursing staff in developing protocols to maintain high standards of patientcare.
Together with the charge nurses, maintains thedepartment/service in compliance with all applicable governing and accordingauthorities. Develops and updatespolicies and procedures as directed.
Completes timely personnel performance evaluations.Tracks performance monthly and reports to the CNO.
Determines the qualifications and competency ofpersonnel. Provides for the orientationand continuing education of staff. Guides the charge nurses as appropriate.
Assists charge nurses in prioritizing work activities.
Ensures staff members are taking breaks/lunches asdictated by regulatory agencies.
Works closely with the Medical Staff to maintain highstandards of patient care and problem solve.
Maintains knowledge of MD privileges.
Participates in management, Hospital, Target 100, andmedical staff committees.
Participates in developing and implementing mechanismsthat foster and encourage collaboration between nursing staff, physicians,other clinical practitioners, and peers.
Develops, implements and evaluates programs whichpromote recruitment, retention, development, and continuing education of unitnursing staff. Tracks performance monthly and reports to CNO.
Collaborates with Hospital Recruiter regardingrecruitment needs.
Collaborates daily with the Nursing Supervisors as toprevious days� unit activities. Providesdirection and feedback to Nursing Supervisors as to specific unit operation
Collaborates with Staffing Coordinator daily onstaffing needs.
Ensures that NSO Master schedule is accurate on adaily basis.
Oversees the activities of all students (NursingAllied Health, etc., where applicable). Ensures staff members are assigned to all patients. Collaborates with instructors.

Attends outside seminars to remain current in nursingand specialty.

In collaboration with Education Department, ensuresdepartmental specific competencies of all staff educational needs are current.
