Job Summary: The Nurse Executive is responsible for direction and oversight of quality of patient care by the nursing staff in the behavioral healthcare setting. Consults with staff, physicians and Executive Director on nursing problems and interpretation of facility policies to ensure patient needs are met. The Nurse Executive will independently supervise, coordinate, monitor and evaluate assigned clinical nursing staff. The supervisory functions include, but are not limited to, hiring, scheduling, coaching, evaluation, disciplinary action, and termination of employees. The Nurse Executive is also a key member of the treatment team, involved in direction of the team in medication administration, treatment planning, coordination of care, and discharge planning. Organizes and administers areas of Patient Care Services to attain the hospital’s objectives established by the Governing Body.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: •Implements standards of nursing practice reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in nursing practice and patient population. •Responsible for the provision of nursing services 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week. •Addresses and supports cultural practices as long as such practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical therapy. •Helps prepare and approve clear, concise and current written policies and procedures to assist the staff and minimize risk factors. •Recommends modifications, additions or deletions to nursing staffing plans to ensure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions to provide optimal patient care coverage. •Initiates and participates in problem solving, policy forming conferences for patient care services. Maintains close coordination with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of services. •Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. •Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality. •Plans and recommends to Chief Executive Officer new facilities or equipment or modifications needed to provide patient care. •Serves as a member of professional staff committees in matters pertaining to patient care. •Participates in leadership and departmental meetings. •Participates in the budget process. •Responsible for cost controls to ensure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from approved departmental budgets. •Ensure that the nursing department’s performance improvement program interfaces with and supports the nursing department performance improvement program. •Ensure the results of each department’s performance improvement activities are reported to the appropriate medical staff and/or performance improvement committees. •Review monthly performance improvement compliance with established indicators and sees that corrective actions are taken when negative outcomes are identified. •Collaborates with hospital leaders in developing, implementing, reviewing, revising and monitoring hospital wide performance improvement activities. •Exercises final authority over those associated with providing nursing care, treatment and services. •Develops and implements nursing staffing plans for the organization. •Provides direct and appropriate patient care, in accordance with all practice standards and Hospital procedures, as required. •Utilize verbal and physical de-escalation as warranted in order to keep patients safe and remain current in warranted certification and training.
Other Duties and Responsibilities: •Adheres to all Hospital policies •Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing •Maintains in using basic computer programs, including the Hospital’s electronic health record and other programs needed to complete the role. •Completes annual education requirements. •Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards. •Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times. •Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff. •Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. •Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate. •Resolves staff concerns at the departmental level. •Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control. •Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to staff and encourages interactive departmental meeting and discussions. •Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. •Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department. •Other job duties as assigned.
Education/Licensure Requirements: •Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. •Current license by this state as a registered nurse or nurse practitioner. •A minimum of a Master’s degree in healthcare management or nursing. •Minimum of four (4) years psychiatric nursing experience. •Pediatric psychiatric nursing experience preferred.
