As a key executive on the UVA Medical Center leadership team, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) provides strategic and operational leadership, ensuring advancement of the UVA Medical Center mission and vision and optimal nursing practice, professionalism, and effectiveness across inpatient and ambulatory services. Reporting to the CEO of UVA Medical Center, the CNO works collaboratively with peers to facilitate operational and clinical improvement, service line/market growth, expense management, short- and long-range planning, program and policy development, and implementation/ evaluation of key performance initiatives. He/she works with leaders within the Medical Center and UVA Physicians Group (UPG) to ensure the highest level of patient safety and quality of care. The CNO will provide leadership in the development and implementation of goals to achieve targeted objectives in quality/safety, patient experience, team member engagement (especially nurse recruitment and retention), and financial stewardship.
Through empowered leadership within a collegial, matrixed structure and team-based culture, the CNO will enhance an atmosphere that focuses on team member, patient, and physician satisfaction and relationships while delivering cost-effective, accessible, and high-quality services to the region.
10+ years of increasingly responsible nurse or operational leadership roles with significant operational experience (e.g., CNO, associate CNO, COO, VP of Operations, other executive leader).
Academic medical center experience highly preferred.
Clinical performance improvement and change management experience.
Quality, safety, and patient experience: Experience functioning both as a member and as a leader of a multi-disciplinary team in tackling issues of quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction, and resource allocation.
Financial and business acumen, demonstrated by the successful development and management of annual budgets reflecting staffing, capital and other operating expenses.
Magnet® experience: Personal success in an institutional Magnet® journey preferred.
Academic credentials: Master of Science in nursing from an accredited nursing program, or a Bachelor of Science in nursing from an accredited nursing program and a master’s degree in a related field. A D.N.P. or Ph.D. is preferred.
