Carilion Clinic, a $2.2 billion non-profit integrated health system in Roanoke, Virginia, is seeking its next systemwide Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).

Carilion Clinic Physicians employs more than 730 physicians and 220 ACPs across more than 70 medical specialties providing care at over 240 practice sites. Carilion Medical Center is comprised of flagship Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, as well as several ambulatory sites in the vicinity. One of the largest hospital centers in the state, it is a magnet-awarded 703- bed hospital with a 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Carilion’s Chief Nursing Officer provides strategic and operational leadership ensuring advancement of the Carilion Clinic mission and vision, as well as optimal nursing practice, professionalism, and effectiveness across both inpatient and ambulatory services. The CNO works collaboratively with peers to facilitate operational and clinical improvement, service line/market growth, expense management, short and long-range planning, program and policy development, implementation, and evaluation of key performance initiatives. He/she works with leaders within the Medical Center and ambulatory settings to ensure the highest level of patient safety and quality of care. The CNO provides leadership in the development and implementation of goals to achieve targeted objectives in quality/safety, patient experience, team member engagement (including nurse recruitment and retention) and financial stewardship. Through empowered leadership within a collegial, matrix structure and team-based culture, the CNO creates an atmosphere that enhances team member, patient, and physician satisfaction/relationships while delivering cost effective, accessible, and high-quality services to the community and the region.
The successful CNO candidate will be a results-driven, collaborative, and innovative nurse executive who is committed to building a nursing function focused on quality, safety and patient experience at Carilion Clinic. The ideal candidate will have a track record of setting strategic direction, while building strong relationships. He/she will also be an engaging and collaborative member of the Carilion Clinic team, with a strong track record of partnership with peers, as well as the ability to connect with front-line staff. The CNO must be financially astute and operationally minded.
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
10 years of recent clinical leadership experience
Clinical leadership experience l in a major tertiary and/or system setting as a senior nursing executive.
Demonstrated track record of development experience
Experience developing nursing leadership and programs that support the standardization and advancement of nursing practice across multiple sites.
Experience in change management
Prior experience driving and transforming culture within nursing through strong change management and influencing capabilities
Prior experience leading performance improvement and change management initiatives
In the areas of patient safety, patient satisfaction, quality and care experience
Ability to collaborate with leaders and staff
Demonstrated experience and success collaborating physician leaders and medical staff and participating on interdepartmental committees, task forces, etc. to develop improved outcome
Education
Nursing degree from an accredited school, VA RN license, and Advanced NursingAdministration Certification also required. DNP or PhD preferred.
