The Position:
The University of Michigan Health (UM-H) Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) is responsible and accountable for all aspects of professional nursing practice and assigned patient care services across all entities of UM-H. The CNE ensures the advancement of the profession of nursing and ensures the consistency in the standards of nursing practice across all UM-H entities.
Nurses at UM-H strive to provide evidence-based care in a compassionate and innovative practice environment. The CNE reports to Dr. David Miller, President, University of Michigan Health (UM-H) and Executive Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, University of Michigan Medical School (UUM-HS), leads professional practice, and develops and articulates the vision and strategic direction of nursing care across the enterprise. Michigan Medicine’s Nursing Leadership team is comprised of nearly 200 leaders and includes Chief Nursing Officers, Associate Chief Nursing Officers, Program Directors, Clinical and Senior Nursing Directors, and Supervisors across the continuum of care. The CNE leads the Nursing Executive Council and is accountable for the Nursing Governance Model and programs that support nursing’s professional practice. Additionally, the CNE is responsible for the overall Nursing budget. In FY24, the IP Nursing services budget is $500M and the Ambulatory services nursing budget is $225M.
As an active member of the University of Michigan Health senior executive team, the CNE supports and facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach, is a member of the Enterprise Triad (comprised of the CNE, Chief Operations Integration Officer and the Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs and Executive Director of the UM Medical Group) and partners with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and other senior leaders to provide clinical services throughout UM-H which integrates the system’s values and principles with a focus on patient and family centered care.
The Ideal Candidate: Doctoral degree in Nursing or a related health care field or currently enrolled in a doctoral program with completion within 18 months of assuming the position.
Licensure/Certification: State of Michigan Board of Nursing license is required upon hire.
Nursing leadership experience in a Magnet designated organization.
Recognized certification in nursing leadership and/or administration.
A minimum of 10 years of administrative responsibility within a complex academic medical center and highly matrixed care delivery system with progressive experience in nursing leadership positions, and a minimum of 5 years at the senior level or higher.
Ideal experience as a CNO within an academic medical center or complex teaching hospital within a large, sophisticated multi-site integrated delivery system.
Extensive clinical nursing and management experience gained through increasingly responsible related management positions which include serving key leadership roles.
Nursing leadership experience in a unionized environment is strongly preferred. Must demonstrate the ability to establish a strong, supportive, and effective partnership with the union.
Nursing leadership experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings is preferred.
Nursing leadership experience supporting measurable outcomes in quality and safety with demonstrated out performance in Nurse Sensitive Indicators - CLABSI, CAUTI, Falls with Injury, and Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury or other quality indicators such as HEIDS in ambulatory care.
National presence in nursing associations through board involvement, taskforces, presentations, committee work or published works. Demonstrated ability to brand Nursing at Michigan.
Experience supporting health system integration efforts is preferred.
Experience with School of Nursing partnerships or academic endeavors with nursing leader-ship development is desired.
Demonstrated innovation and success in nurse recruitment and retention strategies, including maintaining vacancy rates below the national average is desired.
Experience in facility planning and major building projects is desired.
